Some pockets of fat on the body are more resistant to diet and exercise. But you have options. Learn how to get rid of stubborn fat with liposuction.

Reaching your weight goals takes a lot of work, and you should feel proud of all your efforts. But you may feel frustrated if your body continues to hold on to the fat around your belly, on the thighs, or under the chin. Don’t blame yourself; some pockets of fat are more resistant to diet and exercise.

But all is not lost. You can get rid of stubborn fat with liposuction.

At Transform Bariatrics in Greenbelt and Rockville, Maryland, Dr. Hitesh Amin and the team of weight loss experts offer many services to help our patients reach their weight goals and feel good about their accomplishments.

For our patients struggling to lose belly pooch or saddle bags with diet and exercise, we recommend consulting our cosmetic surgeon to find out if liposuction can help.

Read on to learn more about liposuction, who may benefit from the procedure, and how it removes stubborn fat.

Liposuction: What you need to know

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. It uses a special tool to remove unwanted body fat from various parts of the body. It’s not a weight loss procedure but an elective surgery that aims to improve body contours.

We perform liposuction to get rid of stubborn fat from many areas of the body, including:

  • Face and chin
  • Breasts
  • Stomach
  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Knees
  • Calves
  • Ankles

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure; most patients go home the same day. Though swelling is a common side effect following liposuction, improvements in body shape following liposuction are immediate.

Who can benefit from liposuction

If your body keeps holding on to fat after reaching your weight goal with diet and exercise, you may benefit from liposuction. Before proceeding with the procedure, you must consult our cosmetic surgeon to ensure you’re a suitable candidate.

A good candidate for liposuction is in good health, at a stable weight, and has a good skin tone. If you smoke, we encourage you to quit before surgery. Smoking may inhibit wound healing, putting you at risk of post-surgery complications.

Getting rid of stubborn fat with liposuction

Our cosmetic surgeon performs tumescent liposuction, a minimally invasive procedure involving injecting saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine solution into the treatment area.

The solution causes the fatty layer under the skin to swell and firm up, making it easier for the surgeon to remove the fat. The lidocaine helps manage pain, and the epinephrine constricts the blood vessels to reduce bleeding.

Our surgeon makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a small, hollow tube called a cannula to suction out the fat. After the procedure, you wear a compression garment to control pain and support healing.

You want to take it easy for a few days following liposuction, but depending on the physical intensity of your job, you may return to light activity within a few days and work within a week or two.

Though you see improvements in your shape right away, it can take a few months for the swelling to fully subside before you see the final results. As long as you maintain your weight, the results from liposuction are long-lasting.

Sometimes, you need help to achieve your ultimate body goals, like getting rid of stubborn body fat with liposuction. If you’re considering cosmetic surgery to improve body contours, schedule a consultation with our surgeon by calling the office today or requesting an online appointment.
