Is Liposuction a Weight Loss Solution?

Is Liposuction a Weight Loss Solution?
Liposuction isn’t a solution for losing significant amounts of weight. Surgeons may remove up to 8 pounds at most. Learn more about liposuction and why it’s not the best way to reach your goal weight.

Liposuction may feel like the best solution for getting rid of all that unhealthy fat you carry. It’s much easier than diet and exercise; the results are immediate.

But the cosmetic procedure isn’t a solution for weight loss. Though you may drop a few pounds from liposuction, doctors can only safely remove a small amount of weight.

At Transform Bariatrics in Greenbelt, Rockville, and Silver Spring, Maryland, we can help you safely lose those unhealthy pounds with medical weight loss or surgery. Then, our general surgeon, Dr. Hitesh P. Amin, can talk to you about liposuction to remove stubborn fat to improve your body shape.

This month’s blog will discuss liposuction and why it’s not a solution for weight loss.

Liposuction for contouring

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes the excess fat from under the skin, a type of fat called subcutaneous fat. We can use liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of fat from almost any part of the body, including:

  • Under the chin
  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Arms
  • Chest

We perform tumescent liposuction, a type of liposuction that involves injecting a solution consisting of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine into the fat we’re removing. The solution makes it easier for us to remove the fat and limits bleeding.

All liposuction procedures are done through small incisions to limit scarring.

Liposuction isn’t for weight loss

Liposuction isn’t a weight-loss procedure. We can only safely remove 6-8 pounds during liposuction. Removing too much fat increases the risk of complications, like an infection, blood clots, or shock.

Though it may sound easy to drop a few pounds, liposuction isn’t recommended for people with a body mass index over 30. People with a high BMI are at greater risk of complications and may not get the results they expect.

You can lose more weight following a medical weight loss plan or surgery. These methods also teach you how to maintain your new healthy weight so you keep it off.

When it’s time for liposuction

Eating a balanced diet and regular exercise can help you reach a healthy weight, but it may not give you a perfect body. Diet and exercise can’t change your genetics or body shape.

If you’re at your goal weight but still have pockets of unwanted fat on your belly or thighs, we can discuss liposuction to improve your shape.

Liposuction isn’t a weight loss solution but it can help you reach your ultimate body goals.
